Space heaters are used to heat small areas or rooms in a house. While old space heaters used to be extremely costly to run and even unsafe, newer energy efficient space heaters are an attractive alternative to turning on central heat to warm the entire house.

Using a Space Heater
Space heaters are perfect for use in homes where energy costs are being closely examined and energy efficiency is highly desired.
Many homeowners have become more aware recently of the need to downsize their home expenses and are turning to space heaters as an alternative to turning on their central heat during winter months.
Space heaters offer the advantage of only heating rooms that are being used and avoiding overheating the entire house unnecessarily.
Another advantage to using a space heater is that they are portable. If a room is being used by a person who is an invalid, elderly or who is ill and needs to be in a room that is kept warmer than the rest of the house.
Newer Models of Heaters
Old space heaters used to be used as a way to heat up rooms, particularly in homes where there was no central heating or heat source outside of a wall heater or a fireplace.
In many cases, these space heaters were extremely inefficient to run and could run up the electricity bill to the point where homeowners would often weigh the value of being warm with a space heater over finding other sources of heat.
Today’s space heaters, however, are an entirely different matter. Contemporary energy efficient space heaters have thermostats that allow the temperature of the heater to be controlled to a level of comfort for individuals in the room where the heater is being used.
Another benefit to modern space heaters is that they have the ability to be used on a timer system. As a result, the heater can be turned on only when needed or be set so that they turn off during hours when a room does not need to be kept at a higher temperature.
In the past, heaters were only electric, which often made them expensive to run. However, newer models are able to operate with heating oil, natural gas or propane gas.
Also, today’s space heaters are available in a wide range of sizes and styles, making them perfect for almost any room in the house.
Types of Space Heaters
There are several different types of contemporary space heaters:
Ceramic Heaters – Of all of the different kinds of space heaters, ceramic heaters are considered one of the safest and most energy efficient. By the very nature of the ceramic heating element, they are able to maintain higher temperatures for longer periods of time than other types of space heaters.
Oil Filled Radiator Heaters – Oil filled radiator heaters are space heaters that have a sealed chamber in which oil fluid is contained. This type of space heater is very energy efficient because the oil does not need to be refilled and once it is warmed the heater gently radiates heat out into the room. Also this type of heater does not use a fan system, so it is quieter to operate.
Halogen Heaters – Halogen heaters are also called reflective heaters. These are especially energy efficient because they use the heat generated from a halogen light bulb instead of a heating element to heat the room.
Conclusion
There are numerous types of modern energy efficient space heaters that are available on the market today.
Using a space heater is an excellent way to moderate energy costs and still be energy efficient at the same time.
